Geography Teacher Education
The Nature-Geography Department was first established to train Geography-Biology and Chemistry teachers when the Teachers’ Institute was opened in 1951. Later starting from the academic year of 1952-1953 the Geography Department became independent and started to run secondary school teacher training programs. Establishing the In-service Teacher Training Institute in 1956 made significant contributions to training qualified teachers and developing geography teachers’ education and methodology.
Due to the increasing number of secondary schools in the 1960s a teaching content has been extended and quality has been raised, the more attention has been paid to higher education of human resources. Therefore the Natural Sciences Department of the Teacher Training State University started to train not only Geography-Natural Science teachers but also to run programs with double majors as Geography-History, Geography-Biology, Geography-Natural Science and Geography-Tourism, and 4000 teachers and professionals have been trained in total.
The current department is one of the Geography education and research centers, and more than 50 teachers and 10 assistants have been teaching and working since its establishment.
The department staff has been paying attention to Geography science and Geography education by dedicating numerous research works and making contributions to the field of development and professional training of graduates.
The contribution of the department staff members to the development of Geography education content and methodology has been enormous. The first department chair, academician B.Gungaadash set a ground for the department activities by developing secondary school Geography textbooks in the 1950s. So the department teachers are still working on primary and secondary school Geography textbooks, curriculum and standards development.
The MNUE curriculum and programs have been approved and accredited by the National Council of Education Accreditation of Mongolia (NCEAM).
